As a translator, how many times did you ask yourself: could this phrase or sentence be translated better? Is this the best possible translation?
I have often asked myself these questions in an effort to produce the best, most accurate, and yet creative translation.
This is especially the case if I am translating some marketing material or performing what some refer to as "transcreation".
The text needs to be creative. It should read as a native expression. It should entice the local readers or consumers as something created just for their needs, not as something foreign.
I often need to think long and hard about brands, logos and mottos which I am translating. The creative approach is what's needed.
I ask myself: Would I personally be attracted to check out or buy certain product because of its cool sounding motto or product description? Does the translation have any hidden messages or meanings that could be misinterpreted in the target language?
Sometimes, the answer comes as a flash idea. Aha! That's right! I love these moments, when the creative nature of this work comes about.
The work of a translator is multifauceted. It involves knowledge, experience and creativity.
